On July 4, 2017, at 1033 hrs. the Second District (Valley Lee) Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad along with the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit Medic 5, and the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad Ambulance 397, were dispatched to 45045 Blake Creek Road, Valley Lee, for CPR in progress.
Engine 61 with Fire Captain Jacob Walker, Driver/Operator Blair Swann, Fire Lieutenant Dylan Walker, and Firefighters Robert Springer and Matt Abbott arrived on the scene and confirmed a male patient in cardiac arrest with CPR being performed by the patient’s wife. It was also determined that the patient was one of our own, a long time, life member of the Second District VFD&RS, and a dear friend to many of us.
Ambulance 67, with Assistant EMS Chief Dan Browne, EMT John Caulder, EMS Provider Earl Knott, and Driver Ray Carter arrived shortly afterward.
SMALS Medic 5 with EMT-P Michael Cahall, EMT Zack Langfield, and Driver James Kurtz soon arrived as well.
Personnel immediately began to administer life saving measures.
Through the combined efforts of the firefighters, EMTs, and the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit, airway management, cardiac management, and advanced life support resumed until the patient regained spontaneous circulation.
The patient was transported to Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital, Priority 1 – No CPR in progress. During transport to the hospital, the patient regained consciousness.
The patient has made a full recovery, and today attends drills and meetings just as he has for nearly 50 years.
The extraordinary efforts and teamwork of the firefighters and emergency medical providers on this incident, under the stressful and demanding conditions encountered, exemplifies the highest traditions and standards of commitment and skill of the volunteer emergency services in which they serve.
We proudly submit these individuals for a Unit Citation Life Saving Award."
