On Sunday, May 19th, 2019, the sun rose on a gorgeous, but warm day, for the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad’s Fire & EMS Open House. The Open House, which coincided with the beginning of EMS Week, was a Community event designed to “put a face” on Co. 6 in Valley Lee and we were thrilled to welcome almost 200 people.

The Open House, from 12 noon to 4 pm, had scheduled events plus static displays, food trucks, beverages, a moon bounce and face painting. A beautiful handmade guitar, donated by Joe Knaggs, was raffled off to one lucky winner, Mr. James Holland, who bought his winning ticket from Life Member, Fuzzy Knott.

We had many organizations assist and participate in the Open House. The Maryland State Police and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office both sent units to cover car seat safety and bicycle safety. We were very privileged to have Trooper 7 from MSP join us for tours and discussions during the Open House. The SDVFDRS Auxiliary provided the beverages and the Moon Bounce to the delight of the children attending. Face Painting was done by Miss Rita, who dazzled us with her clever designs! In addition to Fire truck and Ambulance tours, folks who attended could have their blood pressure checked and got a free card to keep track of their prescribed medications. Children had broken stuffed toys ‘mended’ at the Teddy Bear Clinic and discuss membership at SDVFDRS with current members at the Membership table staffed by Fire, EMS and Auxiliary members.

The scheduled events brought much excitement to the Open House with Fire Extinguisher demonstrations and audience participation. The highlight of the day was the car fire and extrication demonstration put on by members of the SDVFD&RS.

Which brings us to food…… Chief’s and Ayse De Buys food trucks participated and delivered delicious food for all to enjoy! Special thanks to Chief’s and Ays De Buys for their participation.

All in all a great day was had by all! We are hoping this can become an annual event in May! See you next time!
