Two SDVFD&RS Members to be inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman's AssocIation Hall of Fame

The Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc., is extremely proud to announce that two of its’ long-standing and dedicated members, Past President Joseph M. Scrivener Sr., and Past President Cindy M. Bowes, have been selected to be inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame. The ceremony was to have taken place on May 2, 2020 at the Annual Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention meeting at the Dunkirk VFD&RS, Dunkirk, MD. However, due to COVID-19, the ceremony will take place on a date to be determined.

Joe Scrivener joined the Second District Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in 1969. He has been an active member for over 41 years, having served in numerous positions to include Firefighter, Fire Lieutenant (1971), Water Supply Officer (2001-2003) Fire and EMS Engineer for many years, and Chief Engineer (1996-1998). He currently continues to drive fire and EMS apparatus as needed. He has been a Life Member of the Department for over 15 years.
Administratively, Mr. Scrivener has held the positions of Assistant Treasurer (2010-2013), Vice President (2004), and President (2005-2008). He has been a consistent member, serving multiple terms on the Board of Directors for over 30 years, and currently still functions in that role.
Additionally, Mr. Scrivener has participated as Chair, Co-Chair, or as a member on numerous committees to include the Budget, Investment, Apparatus Review, New Pumper, and Boat Committees.
Throughout the years, he has received many awards from the Department to include the 40 Year Achievement Award, Presidents Award in 2003, and numerous Top Responder Awards.
In addition, Mr. Scrivener served as a delegate to the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association and Maryland State Firemen’s Association for many years (1999-2010), actively attending the meetings and annual conventions.

Cindy Bowes joined the Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad in 1986. She has been an active member for over 34 years. She has served in all emergency medical services officer roles to include EMT, EMS Lieutenant, EMS Captain, and Assistant EMS Chief.
Administratively, Cindy has served terms as Recording Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, and President (2012-2014). She has also served as a member of the Board of Directors for many years, elected to numerous terms, and currently serves in that role. Additionally, she currently serves as the Department Chaplain. She is a Life Member of the Department.
Throughout her long tenure with the Department, Mrs. Bowes has participated in numerous committees to include the New Ambulance, LOSAP, Budget, New Building and Uniform, and was Chairperson of the Club Fund for many years. She currently administers the Sunshine Fund, which she has also taken care of for numerous years.
Mrs. Bowes has received numerous awards from the Department to include EMS Rookie of the Year, EMS Provider of the Year, President’s Award, Chief’s Award, as well as numerous Top Runner awards, and Top LOSAP Honors.
In addition, she was an active delegate to the St. Mary’s County Ambulance and Rescue Association, serving as the Quality Assurance Manager. Cindy also served as a delegate/alternate to the Southern Maryland Firemen’s Association and Maryland State Firemen’s Association for numerous years, actively attending meetings and convention events in both organizations.

Induction into the Southern Maryland Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame is a very prestigious honor, usually requiring many years of selfless and dedicated service by the individual not only within their respectful departments, but also at the county and tri-county levels. These two dedicated members have a combined service of over 75 years of devoted and faithful volunteer service to the SDVFD&RS and to their community.
The Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad is so proud to have these faithful citizens as members, and so excited and pleased to see them inducted into the SMVFA Hall of Fame.
