The Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad is proud to announce that two of our Emergency Medical Technicians, Dan Browne and Kim Collins, have successfully completed the St. Mary’s County Intravenous Technician Course sponsored by the St. Mary’s County Advance Life Support Unit. Successful completion and certification allows these EMTs to initiate IV Therapy in the field when warranted to allow Paramedics/Flight Medics/Doctors to administer medications as needed. IV Technician candidates must have been certified as an Emergency Medical Technician for at least 1 year, and have responded to 100 calls. The course content consists of 12 hours of classroom including anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, principles of IV therapy, signs/symptoms and assessment findings warranting IV therapy initiation, documentation, and local and state protocols. Additionally, candidates must successfully complete mandatory skills labs by actually administering at least 20 successful practice IVs in actual classmates, colleagues, or volunteers. Once certified, IV Technicians are required to maintain their skills level through actual on-call administrations and required annual formal refresher training. Congratulations to Dan and Kim!
