October was Fire Prevention Month, a time to look at fire safety and the steps everyone can take to reduce the risk of a dangerous fire in their home or workplace. The Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad have been helping spread the message of fire safety by participating in a variety of events and initiatives throughout the month.

To kick it off, we hosted a homeschool day at the firehouse, where homeschoolers could come and learn all about fire safety and prevention. At the event, we had a variety of interactive activities that helped educate kids on fire safety. The kids also got a chance to tour the firehouse and see inside the engine and ambulance.

We visited the Kiddie Campus of Callaway, King’s Christian Academy, Little Flower School, and Piney Point Elementary School. The firefighters taught the importance of having a working smoke alarm, how to create a fire escape plan, prevent kitchen fires, and much more. The kids were also given fire safety material such as activity books and fire safety tip cards to go home with.

The Department also hosted local Girl Scouts where they were taken on a guided tour of the firehouse. They explored the various equipment and tools used by firefighters in the line of duty. The girls also got a chance to see all the apparatus up close.

Sparky the Fire Dog was a popular guest at several events! He made his appearance at the Halloween Kids Bingo, as well as the October Auxiliary Breakfast. He brought joy to the attendees of these events and was a real crowd pleaser!

We also got to participate in Piney Point Elementary School’s annual Trunk or Treat and Lowes Fire Prevention Day. Both were a huge success this year!

When it comes to fire safety, it’s important to remember that prevention is key.
