Second District Volunteers Sharpen Cutting Skills
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Deputy Fire Chief Ronald (Ronnie) Alvey
June 26, 2024

Volunteers from the Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad recently participated in a training session focused on the proper use and maintenance of various cutting tools. These tools, which include torches, K-12 saws, plasma cutters, and air chisels, play a vital role in emergency response, allowing firefighters to gain access to victims trapped in wrecked vehicles, collapsed structures, or other confined spaces.
Maintaining proficiency in operating these tools is essential. Regular training ensures firefighters are familiar with the latest safety protocols and can operate the tools effectively under pressure.
Here's a closer look at some of the cutting tools covered in the training and their applications in emergency situations:
* Torches: Used for cutting through metal bars, gates, and sheet metal.
* K-12 saws: Powerful saws capable of cutting concrete, brick, and asphalt.
* Plasma cutters: Utilize a focused plasma arc to cut through conductive metals with high precision.
* Air chisels: Effective for breaking apart concrete, brick, and stone as well as cutting sheet metal.
By mastering these tools, volunteer firefighters can perform critical rescue tasks during emergencies, potentially saving lives and minimizing property damage.

SDVFDRS provides free training for its members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please visit our website (www.sdvfdrs.org) or visit the station.
