2 years ago I was hauling my trailer down Route 95 in North Carolina on the way to Darlington for the fall NASCAR race. As I was cruising down the highway in the middle of the night, one of the load balancing bars on the hitch failed. Before I was able to react, the trailer pulled violently to one side. The tow vehicle and trailer ended up rolling and sliding sideways down the highway, skidded off the side of the road, turned upside down, rolled down a steep embankment and crashed into a line of trees. I ended up hanging upside down inside my Explorer amidst the wreckage, the passenger side roof crushed down to the seat. Fortunately for me, the embankment and the way I slid down it resulted in the passenger side roof striking the trees first rather than the driver side, or I would not be here.

The whole thing was witnessed by another motorist who had been drafting along behind me, and they were there calling emergency services and helping to kickout the remainder of the windshield before I could even shut off the motor. Fire and rescue from a little nearby town were on scene in minutes, from a local community VFDRS just like Valley Lee.

The professionalism, care, and compassion they showed to me that evening left a mark on me that won't go away anytime soon, and reconfirmed to me that this is a country populated by the finest people on earth, and we don't have to look far to find them around us. I was not seriously injured aside from a neck strain, but was a pretty bloody mess. After making sure I got medical care they took me back to the station with what remained of my possessions. They put me up for the night, fed me the next morning, helped me make arrangements to get back on my way, and even drove me over to the county airport so that I could rent a car.

In the true spirit of a NASCAR fan, I saw no reason not to continue on to the race that weekend, so I did! But as I was sitting in the stands watching the race thanking God I was still alive, I was also thankful for those men and women who routinely protect their communities with never enough thanks from those they serve.

I go back to Darlington each year, and each time I stop in to visit with those fine folks. It is becoming something of a tradition. But I also make a point of thanking every other firefighter, EMS, police, servicemen/women when I get the chance. You are all part of the finest tradition in whatever way you serve. Thanks and God Bless.

My cousin was the person driving in the accident where the car was totaled by a pole. I just wanted to say that the cross in the background must have had something to do with the fact that he is alive.
Michael, you are alive for a reason. God loves you.

Valley Lee is connected to your new location and depending on where you are located in Great Mills we might just be the dept that would come out to your rescue first. Great to hear youre a previous volunteer, maybe that will inspire you to come volunteer with your new local dept. As for the parade we werent there because we were short an engine and thought what was left in service better served our community and yours on this side of the bay bridge.
